6. The Emergency English Teacher: Basic English Nouns, Word Searches and Spelling Tasks

David M. Scraggs

👨🏽‍🏫If you teach beginner-level/ young English learners, you already know the struggle. Some days, you walk into the classroom and your carefully crafted lesson evaporates because the students are tired, overwhelmed, or simply not ready for another dense grammar explanation. On those days, what you really need is a simple, motivating, and genuinely helpful. You need a book of ESL Word Searches for Beginners

👨🏽‍🏫This is precisely the gap ‘The Emergency English Teacher: Basic English Nouns: Word Searches and Spelling Tasks’ fills. I have created a clean, classroom-ready word search book that provides teachers with a reliable photocopiable bank of word-based puzzles specifically designed for true beginners. This isn’t just another generic puzzle book; it’s designed with real ESL classrooms in mind. However, it is equally helpful for homeschooling children at a beginner level.

👨🏽‍🏫How does this ESL Word Searches book work? The book follows a super simple formula.

Step 1. The students have to find eight simple nouns in a word search puzzle. All the words are related to a theme, which helps students learn them in context. For example, ‘in the school playground’, ‘a birthday party’ ‘on a picnic’ etc. There are forty themes to cover.

Step 2. The words are written under each puzzle but with missing letters. As the students find the words in the puzzle they can fill in the missing letter.

Step 3. On the opposing page are pictures of each word with blanks underneath for spelling. The students have to write out the name of the object in full under each image. This helps them to internalize the meaning of the word and its correct spelling.
