English Grammar in Use: A self-study reference and practice book for intermediate students, Raymond Murphy

Cambridge University Press

👩‍🏫 English Grammar in Use by Raymond Murphy is the book you recommend to your students who want to improve their grammar skills. It is one of the most widely used grammar books for intermediate-level English learners. What I like about this book is that it provides a no-thrills, clear, and concise reference guide for teachers and students. It was first published in 1985 and has since undergone many editions, with the fifth edition released in 2019.

The reason this book is so popular is that it has a dual purpose. It acts as both a reference for grammar rules and a practice book. The exercises help embed each grammar rule.

The structure of the book

Here are the key structural features that make the book what it is:

  • Units: There are 145 units in the book. Each unit typically spans two facing pages: one side (left) for the explanation of a grammar point, and the other (right) side. Providing exercises to practice that grammar point.
  • Progression: It begins with more straightforward, foundational grammar topics (present and past tenses, etc.) and progresses toward more complex issues (modals, conditionals, phrasal verbs, etc.). Units are arranged in increasing complexity.
  • Explanations: The grammar explanations are clear, using substitution charts, example sentences, timelines, and comparisons. The layout is consistent across units, which helps the reader know what to expect.
  • Exercises: The exercises on the right-hand page are generally controlled or semi-controlled; that is, they provide structure while allowing some variation. There is also a mix of exercise types, including gap-fills, sentence completion, multiple-choice questions, transformations, and more.
  • Study Guide/Diagnostic: At the back, there is a self-assessment/study guide that allows students to test themselves, identify their weak areas in grammar, and be directed to the relevant units.
  • Appendices: The book includes appendices covering irregular verbs, spelling, and differences (e.g., British vs American usage).
  • Supplementary material: There are extra exercise books, online resources, and apps in some editions to extend practice.

Verdict: Awesome stuff!
